Jessica Pegula recently reacted to the United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) star Mallory Swanson achieving her school yearbook goal of winning an Olympic gold medal. Pegula also hinted at winning a gold medal herself.
The U.S. women’s soccer team defeated Brazil 1-0 to win the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. It was Swanson’s 100th match for the United States and she scored a goal in the 57th minute to give her team the lead.
The U.S. women’s team had previously defeated Brazil twice in the Olympic finals — at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, the results of the 2004 and 2008 Olympics were repeated, with the U.S. winning the gold medal, Brazil taking the silver, and Germany winning the bronze.
Following Mallory Swanson’s heroics, a quote from her school yearbook surfaced in which she had expressed her desire to be on the USA soccer team and win a gold medal for her country.
“My favorite memory of 6th grade was Outdoor Ed. I want to be on the USA soccer team and win a gold medal,” Swanson’s yearbook quote read.
Reacting to this, American tennis star Jessica Pegula, who made her Olympic debut in 2021 in Tokyo, took to social media to laud Swanson. Her reaction also hinted at her own aspirations of winning a medal for the United States in tennis.
“A girl can dream 💭 ,” Jessica Pegula wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Pegula had a forgettable outing at the Tokyo Olympics, falling 3-6, 3-6 to eventual gold medalist Belinda Bencic in the first round.
This year, at the Paris Olympics, the World No. 6, who was seeded fifth, defeated Viktorija Golubic 6-3, 6-4 in the first round but lost to Elina Svitolina 6-4, 1-6, 3-6 in the second.
