The New England Patriots are reportedly trading Pro Bowl pass rusher Matthew Judon to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NFL Network‘s Ian Rapoport on Wednesday (August 14).
The reported trade follows stalled talks between Judon and the Patriots on a new deal.
“Sources: The #Patriots are trading pass-rusher Matthew Judon to the #Falcons, landing Atlanta a standout on defense. It’s a third-rounder going back.
At long last, New England resolves its situation with Judon with a trade, Rapoport wrote on his X account. “The #Patriots had extensive contract talks with Matt Judon, talks that never resolved his situation.
Instead, he heads to Atlanta for a 2025 third-round pick.”
Judon and the Falcons have not yet worked out a new contract, according to NFL Network‘s Tom Pelissero.
“So after multiple years of trying to land a veteran pass rusher, the #Falcons acquire Matthew Judon.
The #Patriots get a hard 2025 3rd-round pick. Judon gets a fresh start.
No new contract (yet),” Pelissero wrote on his X account.
Judon, who was set to make a $6.5 million base salary in the final year of his current deal, appeared to be in an animated exchange with Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo on July 29, but publicly expressed his desire to stay with the team.
The 31-year-old appeared in just four games in 2023 due to a bicep tear and enters his ninth NFL season with 66.5 career sacks with the Patriots and Baltimore Ravens (2016-2020).
