Philadelphia Eagles Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie has long been known for his unwavering commitment to family and community.
Throughout his 27 years leading the organization, he has consistently referenced the Eagles family in public remarks, emphasizing the importance of unity and support within the team and its fan base.
However, it is Lurie’s personal connection to autism that has inspired one of his most impactful legacies.
Lurie’s brother is on the autism spectrum, a fact that has deeply influenced his approach to philanthropy and community engagement.
Recognizing the prevalence of autism within families across the country, with one in 54 families affected, Lurie saw an opportunity to leverage the power of the Philadelphia Eagles brand as a force for change in the autism community.
Under Lurie’s leadership, the Eagles Autism Foundation was established with the goal of driving funds and raising awareness for autism research and support services.
What began as a fundraising initiative with ambitious goals of raising millions of dollars has since evolved into an integral aspect of the Eagles organization’s identity.
Ryan Hammond, Executive Director of the Eagles Autism Foundation, explains that the foundation’s mission has become woven into the fabric of who the Eagles are every single day.
By prioritizing initiatives that support individuals and families affected by autism, the Eagles have demonstrated their commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
One of the most significant manifestations of this commitment is the Eagles Autism Challenge, an annual event presented by Lincoln Financial Group.
The fourth edition of the event, held at Lincoln Financial Field, marked a momentous occasion for the Eagles and the autism community alike.
After the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic forced the 2020 event to be held virtually, the 2021 Eagles Autism Challenge saw a return to in-person participation, with over 1,800 people taking part in the ride, run, or walk event.
The sense of camaraderie and support was palpable as participants came together to raise funds and awareness for autism research and support services.
The event was attended by Eagles coaches and players, who offered pep talks and showed their support for the cause.
Notably, All-Pro center Jason Kelce played a significant role in fundraising efforts, raising $50,000 as a guest bartender in Sea Isle, New Jersey, over the summer and matching that donation with his wife, Kylie.
For Lurie, the Eagles Autism Challenge represents the realization of his vision to bring people together to do incredible things.
Speaking at the event’s Kickoff Event, he emphasized the Eagles’ biggest strength: their ability to unite individuals and communities in pursuit of a common goal.
As the Eagles continue to prioritize their involvement in the autism community, their commitment to making a positive impact serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie.
Through his dedication to family, philanthropy, and community engagement, Lurie has established the Eagles as a beacon of hope and support for individuals and families affected by autism.
